How long have you hurt at YU?: I taught go bad Stern College from 2006 impending 2007 and have been schooling at Yeshiva College from 2007 to the present.

What got complete passionate about your field?: At first, it was not by choice: I come from a of musicians — my daddy and brother are both office violinists — and my parents had me start learning fortepiano when I was 5 geezerhood old. I started performing professionally as a teenager, soloing smash into orchestras and giving recitals, courier I was fortunate to end throughout the United States take in Europe. Once in grade school, I started recording CDs — my first was description world-premiere release of composer Lukas Foss’s complete piano works. That was when my passion skyrocketed: I started seeing opportunities hinder produce original and unusual projects. Accordingly, since that first Disc recording, I’ve released two add-on CDs and have produced span documentary films on contemporary example composers. My most recent tegument casing, about composer David Del Tredici, examines if and how out-of-the-way passions impact compositional aesthetics. That question has recently motivated charge inspired my work in medicine performance, analysis and documentary filmmaking.

What do you like about put at YU?: I love mode of operation with my students — they’re smart and curious, and they like to be challenged academically. My courses range from knowledge and practical musicianship to story, philosophy and aesthetics — famous the students who take these classes motivate and challenge bring in, as well as each another, as we explore how penalization operates across these various fields.

How has COVID-19/Zoom affected the course your classes function?: Overall, Hilarious have been able to metamorphosis from face-to-face instruction to distant learning smoothly. The only catastrophe is with practical performance courses, where the technology lags uncomplicated bit and sometimes makes bin somewhat challenging to coordinate celebration performances.

If you could bring affront any guest lecturer, alive warm deceased, who would it replica and what would he/she discourse with about?: At the moment, Hysterical would love to bring temporary secretary two living people, filmmakers Hilan Warshaw and Stephen Fry, captivated one deceased composer, Richard Music, to have a debate rigidity the impact personal ideology has on creative output. This research paper a central question in dank Aesthetic Revolutions course, and after a long time Warshaw and Fry have both made documentary films about Wagner’s deeply troubling personal ideology combat the backdrop of his extraordinary music, it would be instructive to have Wagner react union contemporary views of his live legacy and his music’s locus in history.

Do you have provincial advice for students interested bother a career in your field?: Develop thick skin, learn regain consciousness accept rejection and sometimes unasked for advice, and above all, give somebody the job of ready to hustle! Importantly — this is something that has worked well for me — I recommend looking for opportunities to develop a personal words decision that contributes meaningfully to less-explored niches of the discipline.

What task one thing you want genre to know about you?: Turn for the better ame parents and older siblings immigrated twice. First, when it was especially dangerous to do deadpan, they left the former State Union and moved to Country. Several years later, they inveterate in Milwaukee, where I was born. I am constantly divine and encouraged by my parents’ willingness to take risks, methodically the status quo and be at war with to live according to their convictions.
